What is Net WPM and Why Does It Matter?

Gross WPM measures raw speed including mistakes. Net WPM is what government exams actually use — it penalises errors. A typist who types fast but makes many errors will have a lower net WPM and may fail even if their gross speed looks impressive.

SSC CGL / CHSL / RRB NTPC Formula
Gross WPM = Total Keystrokes ÷ 5 ÷ Minutes
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (Errors ÷ Minutes)

Example: 2000 keystrokes, 10 min, 4 errors
Gross = 2000 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 40 WPM
Net = 40 − (4 ÷ 10) = 40 − 0.4 = 39.6 WPM → PASS ✓
CPCT (MP) Formula — No Backspace
Net Speed = (Total Keystrokes − Total Errors) ÷ 5 ÷ 15

Example: 2500 keystrokes, 30 errors, 15 min
Net = (2500 − 30) ÷ 5 ÷ 15 = 2470 ÷ 75 = 32.9 WPM → PASS ✓
Note: Backspace is disabled — every wrong keystroke is permanent.
Is backspace allowed in SSC typing test?
Yes — backspace is allowed in SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, and RRB NTPC typing tests. However, each error still counts against your net WPM score. CPCT (Madhya Pradesh) is the only major exam where backspace is completely disabled.
